How is a paediatric dentist different from a general dentist?

A paediatric dentist is recognised by the Australian Dental Board as a specialist associated with the comprehensive care of all aspects of oral health for children age 0 to 18 years. The specialty focuses on the preventive and restorative needs of growing children and includes the treatment of children with special needs.

For some children, diagnosis of particular problems and subsequent dental management may be outside the scope of the general dentist. Paediatric dentists have completed further training which equips them to provide comprehensive treatment in a safe, predictable and positive environment. We provide inter-disciplinary management for children with special medical and behavioural considerations both in the dental practice and in a Day Surgery setting.

Do I need a referral?

Many patients are referred by their local dentist or general medical practitioner. However a referral is not necessary. We work closely with our referring practitioners and keep them informed of our patient’s progress. Depending on the type of referral and what the family prefer, we may complete a course of care and provide long-term continuous care, or return the patient back to the dentist for ongoing care.

At what age should my child have their first dental check up? 

The Australasian and American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry recommend the first dental visit when the first tooth erupts or by the age of 1 year. By establishing a dental home at an early age, children will have the best chance of preventing dental problems.

How do I prepare my child for their first visit?

You can play a large part in preparing your child for their first visit to the dentist. Relax, as any anxiety on your part will probably be sensed by your child. Tell your child that we will “count” and “take pictures” of their teeth. Avoid fear provoking words such as “pull” and “needle”, and statements such as “the doctor will not hurt you.”

Our paediatric dentist will explain each procedure in an age-appropriate manner and gauge your child’s temperament and coping ability throughout the visit. After an initial examination, she will discuss your child’s dental needs and develop a suitable treatment plan. She prefers you remain in the treatment room unless otherwise requested or if you have other children to attend to.

Radiographs

Our practice is equipped with highly sophisticated digital radiography equipment.  Radiographs are important for proper diagnosis and treatment planning.  If your child is unable to tolerate the digital x-ray sensor in his or her mouth then our paediatric dentists may take a panoramic radiograph.  Our panoramic x-ray unit allows selection of child mode and segmentation, thus reducing radiation exposure by up to 93%. You may even opt to stay in the room with your child during the x-ray taking process.

Fees and Payments

The cost of treatment varies and depends on the individual’s needs. When you come in for your first appointment we will discuss your child’s treatment needs, options and associated fees.

Payments can be made by cash, cheque, direct debit, Mastercard, VISA card or bank cheque. EFTPOS facilities are available for credit and debit cards. Credit card payments can also be taken over the phone.
